She felt she didn't fit the picture. And even when walking with him in Harlem and they meet like five Black dudes at a corner, she got that awful feeling of 'you're holding his hand and you want to pull your hand away coz you don't want the judgment.' She says Black men certainly are more comfortable with interracial dating. And she describes the feeling Black women have when they see a Black man with a White woman as an instinctual primal feeling of 'you want her you don't want me. I don't look anything like her, so you don't like'.

In portraying Kenya McQueen, she discovered that she is definitely more open to interracial dating. And as much she has been mostly dating Black men, she now thinks she is probably more open to the idea of interracial dating. She adds that the movie "Something New" is very universal ... it's a love story at the core. It's about following your heart and acknowledging the fact that life may bring you something that didn't fit what you thought ... from religion to class or even a job. What people should learn from the movie is stepping outside of that comfort zone. Seeing what's there that might bring you the most happiness.

When it comes to interracial dating, some racial crossovers are considered more acceptable than others. The most common interracial dating combo is that of White men and Asian women interracial couples. More than 50% of the Asian American women date and marry interracially. In fact, in San Francisco, Jewish-Chinese marriages have become so common to the extent of being dubbed 'Chewish'.

Is this interracial dating combination the reason for most White men fetishizing Asian women? I have met lots of Asian women who have the similar story some jerk who hit on her at a party with the spark of Asian fantasy in his eyes. "You know those guys who make your insides squeam?" Andrea, a Chinese-American writer, said to me recently." Well I figured exactly what she meant. The thing is, not all Asian women attractions are based on sexual fetish. For some, it is more than that. I met Jason, a composer who has been in a serious relationship with an Asian woman - Japanese. He said, "For a lot of Caucasian men in the United States dating an Asian woman from a somewhat traditional background is like returning to the values of your parents' generation. Instead of dating a woman raised with contemporary values, it's sort of like going back to your mom in the '50s or '60s.

"For Jason, interracial dating or his dating a Japanese lady isn't a step backwards. Jason doesn't see his choice as a step backward, however. He just needs someone with a stronger sense of family and community. "What I see around me in this country is a premium placed on the individual, on one's own career and one's own life," he explains. "That doesn't leave a lot of space for sharing a life with someone. Traditional cultures place value on cooperating with your family, your partner, your children. Asian women are raised with more emphasis on family. For a white male, it's comforting to be with someone who holds that important and gives you the space to let that be important.

"Asian women on the other hand, find interracial dating as liberating. It is expected of Asian women to confirm to their families' traditions. And an Americanized man is more flexible and open to equality than an Asian man. Interracial dating makes them date someone who brings none of those presumptions of their Asian culture to the relationship which is such a relief. Most college going Asian women are in school partially to find a suitable marriage partner, and also to experiment with interracial dating. They're in college to explore, and White men guys are more nurturing of that. They describe American culture as elastic.

Much as Asian families may feel hesitant about having non-Asian sons-in-law, some crossovers are more socially accepted, even desired. An Asian family will frequently welcome a white man.

Until recently, the phrase "interracial couple" typically meant one thing: Black men and White women. Not anymore. Well clearly, there is a brand-new wave sweeping over our traditional notions of interracial dating as supported by the recent real-life personal ads. Whoopi Goldberg and Eddie Gold, Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubrey, model Iman and David Bowie, Marie Johnson and Marty Grey are the members of Hollywood glitterati ... the new wave celebrity trend ... Black women's lives being touched by interracial dating and marriage.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Census, in 1987 there were 56,000 Black women married to White me which is 11,000 more than in1980. These figures confirm that the number of Black women marrying White men is both extensive and growing. It also shows that the White men dating interracially are defining their own standard of beauty ... beautiful Black women who don't look like Marilyn Monroe and Brooke Shields.

Here is an example: the first time Shadoe Stevens, (star of Hollywood Squares and host of American Top 40, the most-listened-to pop-music radio show in the world) saw his wife, Beverly, a former international model, the fireworks, he says, were explosive and instant. "The first time I saw her," says Shadoe, "I couldn't move. She was so beautiful and I don't mean just physically. She had this incredible aura about her, it was in her eyes. When I looked at her there was this great blinding flash in the universe. I kept staring at her and thinking, I've got to get to know her. I never thought about color and had no feeling about it one way or the other. I guess the feeling was mutual. Beverly later told me she had to get out of there because she felt like she was 14 all over again. It was quite overwhelming." And after meeting her officially, they have never been apart since then.

Forget Hollywood glamour romance in this unique story. It seems that with Black women, something has so drastically shifted traditional attitudes on love and marriage to interracial dating and marriage. So what's the deally yo? Well according to experts the basis are as personal and diverse as the interracial couples themselves. For some Black women, its the lack of availability of "marriageable" Black men as they put it. But many of the Black Women and White men alike have uniquely personal reasons for their decision. However, opportunity certainly seems to be a major factor. And we can't deny the fact that today's professional Black woman is constantly interacting with White men on a whole new level - as peers, as equals.

With such interaction, why wouldn't there be chemistry that just doesn't respect racial barriers?
