New research conducted by Harris Interactive finds that, on average, 236 eHarmony members marry every day in the United States as a result of being matched on eHarmony. This number represents a 162 percent increase in “I do’s” since 2005, when Harris Interactive conducted a similar phone poll that found an average of 90 eHarmony members married every day. Based on the research, eHarmony marriages accounted for 2 percent of new U.S. marriages during the study period, up from 0.79 percent of marriages in 2005.

“Many eHarmony members find long-term, satisfying relationships that lead to marriage,” said Greg Waldorf, CEO of eHarmony. “These results from a credible market research company like Harris Interactive validate and distinguish our scientific approach and compatibility matching models.”

“We were pleased to work with eHarmony and utilize our Internet research expertise to help them better understand their members’ behavior,” said Dan Hucko, senior vice president of corporate communications at Harris Interactive.

eHarmony’s scientific approach and emphasis on helping people find compatible long-term partners makes it different from other online dating services. In addition to its ongoing research in the United States, the company has also conducted extensive marriage research in international markets in order to tailor its compatibility models.

“eHarmony was the first online relationship service to use relationship science to develop its compatibility matching models,” noted Dr. Galen Buckwalter, chief scientist of eHarmony. “We are committed to investigating and understanding what makes marriages successful through further rigorous scientific research.”

The Harris Interactive/eHarmony study was conducted through a nationwide online survey using a representative sample of 7,135 Americans aged 20-54 who were married between April 1, 2006 and March 31, 2007. Data were weighted to be representative of recently married U.S. residents within that age range. Respondents were about equally divided between men (49 percent) and women (51 percent). U.S. Census Bureau data were used to extrapolate the number of couples nationwide who married after being matched by eHarmony. The overall margin of error is 0.51 percent.

In nearly two years, the number of marriages resulting from eHarmony more than doubled. A Harris Interactive study conducted for eHarmony in 2007 found that eHarmony led to an average of 236 people getting married every day in the United States.

The recently released study also found that more than more than 1.13 million 20-54 year olds said they were in a non-married, monogamous relationship with someone they met on eHarmony

Other significant findings include:

• 44 percent of newlyweds who met through an online dating site were matched by eHarmony 
  
• Americans are less often meeting their spouses at work (15 percent), through friends (15 percent), at school (9 percent) or through family (4 percent) than in the past
  
• Among Americans who met their spouse anywhere online, 26 percent met on eHarmony
  

Methodology
This eHarmony study was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive in July and August 2009 among 7,994 respondents aged 20-54 who were married between January 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009, as well as a larger sample of 136,203 newlywed and non-newlywed respondents aged 20 to 54. Respondents were about equally divided between men (48.3 percent) and women (51.7 percent).
Data were weighted two ways. Qualified newlywed data were weighted to be representative of recently married U.S. residents aged 20-54. Newlywed and non-newlywed respondents aged 20-54 were weighted to be representative of the U.S. population.

eHarmony, Inc. and the New Jersey Attorney General's Division on Civil Rights (DCR) have settled allegations that the company violated New Jersey's Law Against Discrimination (LAD) by failing to offer a same-sex matching service.  As a result of the settlement agreement, eHarmony, Inc. will start a new service for same-sex matching called Compatible Partners by March 31, 2009. The settlement makes clear that eHarmony, Inc. has not been found in violation of the law. 

"Even though we believed that the complaint resulted from an unfair characterization of our business, we ultimately decided it was best to settle this case with the Attorney General since litigation outcomes can be unpredictable," said eHarmony, Inc. legal counsel Theodore B. Olson, a partner at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP.  "eHarmony looks forward to moving beyond this legal dispute, which has been a burden for the company, and continuing to advance its business model of serving individuals by helping them find successful, long-term relationships." 

The case originated in 2005 when a New Jersey resident filed a formal complaint with the State alleging that eHarmony violated his rights under the LAD by not offering a same-sex matching service.  For more than three years, eHarmony vigorously contested the allegations of the complaint. On July 23, 2007, however, the Director of the DCR issued a Finding of Probable Cause that eHarmony had violated the LAD.  eHarmony filed a Motion for Reconsideration of the finding, which was pending at the time of the settlement.

Doctor Helen Fisher, the chief scientific advisor to match.com has revealed the science behind successful relationships after testing the romantic chemistry of nearly 30,000 singles.

The research involved studying the character traits of more than 28,128 match.com members and has been developed to guide singles to potential partners. It examines not just basic personality traits, but also includes other aspects ranging from favourite foods and the type of exercise preferred to attitudes towards risk and even expertise with machinery.

Dr Fisher, who has studied the science of romance for 35 years, believes that this explains why some couples, such as Brad and Angelina, enjoy more successful relationships than others, such as Brad and his former partner Jennifer.

It hinges on which of four chemicals - dopamine, oestrogen, serotonin or testosterone - is most dominant in the brain. The balance of these chemicals helps create four different personality types which can then be used to determine how compatible people are.

The four personality types are explorers, builders, negotiators and directors.

Explorers, ruled by dopamine, tend to be novelty seeking, risk-taking and spontaneous and tend to work well with other explorers. Brad and Angelina are both explorers.

Serotonin is the dominant chemical in builders, people who are calm, conscientious, loyal and cautious. Unfortunately for Jennifer who is a builder, builders are more likely to be drawn to other builders and, like Brad, Jennifer's recent ex-boyfriend John Mayer is an explorer.

Negotiators (oestrogen) are imaginative, intuitive and compassionate and they have good people skills while directors, who are ruled by testosterone, are more direct, decisive, competitive and often musical. Directors and Negotiators are better with each other than with a person sharing the same characteristics.

It does not always mean there cannot be a successful match between other combinations, but it may take more effort to keep the relationship alive. For instance, negotiators and builders can have a fiery but ultimately successful relationship. Dr Fisher has identified 10 different pairings, but some work a lot better than others.

Dr Fisher said: "The reasons why we love are incredibly complex, but it is possible to scientifically understand why people partner better with certain types."

So far seven million members of the online dating service Match.com have taken the personality test based on this research in order to find the perfect partner.
