New reports from the Gallup Group and an American university study have shown a big increase in interracial marriages. The Interracial Couple has become a modern image.
The USA Today/Gallup poll revealed "Americans are approaching unanimity in their views of marriages between blacks and whites -- 86% of Americans approve of Black-White marriage."
Gallup reported: "Americans' acceptance of marriage between people of different races continues to grow and is approaching unanimity, with 86% now approving of marriages between blacks and whites. Widespread approval of interracial marriage is a dramatic shift from roughly 50 years ago when 4% approved, and even 20 years ago, when about half as many approved as do so today." The statistics broke down to "96% of blacks, 84% of whites approve."
And a major study titled “Changing Patterns of Interracial Marriage in a Multiracial Society” published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, found that between the years of 1980 to 2008, the rate of intermarriage between the two groups had increased dramatically.

The study concluded that thirty years ago, only 5% of black men were married to a white woman -- a rate that had almost tripled to 14%, by 2008. Interracial couples are now a common sight on the streets and in restaurants. Only 1% of black women had married white partners in 1980 -- that was up to 6% in 2008.
Researchers said the study was completed using data taken from the 2010 United States Census statistics, and found that "black-white intermarriage since 1980 increased by a higher percentage than for any other racial or ethnic group."
From California to Canada, polls and statistics are showing a societal change in the way relationships are formed and viewed. The Internet society is largely responsible for the change. More relationships are formed online than through traditional venues. Interracial dating has become the norm -- INTERRACIAL CUPID is the #1 Black/White Relationship site in the U. S., Canada, the UK, Australia and Western Europe. Free interracial dating sites are exploding.
“The number of marriages between whites and African Americans is undeniably increasing rapidly,” said Zhenchao Qian, lead author of the study -- who is a professor of sociology and a leading social demographer at Ohio State University. Qian conducted the study along with Daniel T Lichter, Professor of Policy Analysis and Management and Sociology at Cornell University.
"Our results point to better race relations in 2008 than 1980, but we still have a way to go,” said Qian. “It used to be that race trumped everything, including education, when it came to marriage between blacks and whites. That is changing.”
“For the first time, we found that highly educated blacks and whites were more likely to intermarry,” the sociologist concluded. “That is very significant and is another sign that racial boundaries are blurring."
Another factor may be the trend noted in the recent book “Is Marriage for White People?” by the Stanford law professor Ralph Richard Banks. In his study of the "Black/White marriage gap," professor Banks looked at the "unmarried black woman" and what seems to be a cultural tendency of some black men not wanting to stay monogamous or even marry in the first place.
Of modern, educated single black women, Banks wrote, "For these women, being single is not a freedom they embrace so much as a condition they manage... It’s time for black women to stop being held hostage to the deficiencies of black men. They should emancipate themselves and not feel as if they have no option but make the best of this bad situation. Black women have been taking one for the team for a long time.”
His solution? Find a man of equal education, income and goals -- look seriously at Interracial Marriage. As one African American woman told Banks, "Why can’t I still be a strong black woman and be married to a white man?”
Interracial Cupid reports that they have thousands of single black women seeking white men for a lasting relationship or marriage.
The different studies also reflect some of the major changes made over the decades. For instance, the original Gallup poll of 1958 was called "Marriages between white and colored people." And the 1968 poll was labled "Marriages between whites and non-whites."
